What is the difference between a law and a principle?

A Law is a concise but general statement of a natural phenomena that has been accepted through facts and further experimentation. Laws are NOT PROVEN STATEMENTS, they are just accepted.

A principle is: -- "a general or FUNDAMENTAL - TRUTH." Principles cover a broad spectrum; and last forever.

A law, is specific; laws are FOUNDED on one or more principles. Principles provide the basis for laws. Laws can be changed and annulled; Whereas principles remain constant.

Laws (rules) are for children; until they learn what principles, laws are founded on; then people need only be guided by principles. Laws would then have only a small place in a persons life.

Principles require 'reasoning ability'. Laws simply require mere 'compliance.'

Example: To a child you might give a law, 'You must not touch the stove'. But to an adult, the principle: 'the stove is hot' would suffice. (This is a simple way to put a principle; the underlying principle being something like: 'hot things are dangerous and can cause harm'.)

A law can be obeyed; but perhaps reluctantly; due to fear of punishment.

Principles when understood, precludes such an attitude; causing a person to appreciate the underlying concept. He is moved by his heart, to follow the principle in its various aspects.

An example of a principle is the Golden Rule. Matthew 7:12: "All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you, you also must likewise do to them." Followers of Confucius observe the principles of li and jen, which address such qualities as kindness, humility, respect, and loyalty. Even people who are not religious have some priorities or guidelines that determine their conduct.

Another Bible principle is about 'faithfulness'. Understanding this would preclude adultery, for which there is a Bible law. Since many Israelites did not live by 'principles', God provided specific laws; and specified punishment.
