Freshwater dolphins, also called river dolphins, usually live in fresh water, with the exception of the La Plata dolphin. As noted, dolphins do not drink salt water because synthesizing the salt water would cause water loss as opposed to water gain (and also why humans should not drink sea water either). Rather, dolphins get their water through the metabolism of their food, much like Australian Desert mice.
