No wonder the dog is confused! You let the dog go out to do it's business and then YOU clean up the mess. It's no different than telling your child to use the washroom, but not the toilet! If you are tired of cleaning up poop in the backyard then make a doggie run on part of the property out of good stiff chicken wire. I've done that and my dogs have a place to go without dirtying up the backyard (that's their play area) and cleaning up a doggy run is far quicker and it should be cleaned up every second day.

∙ 16y agoThe way I trained both my German Shepherd and Chow Chow is to walk them (on a leash and collar) to the curb or sidewalk. Once you get to the point you do not want them to cross, tell them "Yard". You then walk forward, if your pet follows, gently pull the leash toward you and guide him back to the spot (in a circle) where you started, the whole time saying (not yelling) yard yard yard. Do this until he/she does not follow. You can incorporate the sit command at the spot he/she is not to cross. Once they stop following you, stand in front of they and gently pull the leash toward you, if he/she comes to you (repeat the yard command as before). It took me approximately 10 mins. to teach this to both my dogs. Each time you walk them do this exercise once you have returned home. Eventually you can drop the leash (leave it still attached at the collar in case) and let them follow you until you get to the point they are not to cross and say the command "Yard". As always remember to praise them for doing it right. Also remember that they live in the moment.

∙ 11y agoUse a Dog Training kennel. Make sure they have enough room to stand, and make a full 360 without bumping into anything. Let them sleep in their training kennel and take them for walks regularly. Dogs do not want to use the bathroom near their sleeping area. Once they get use to going outside, they wont be making messes inside anymore.
