A wolf's howl can be heard from several miles away. Wolves howl to communicate with one another. Also, wolves howl to show who is the most dominant. The wolf with the lowest howl is the alpha wolf.

I'm not sure, but I was reading and I think their howl has been recorded as far as 6 miles away. I'm not sure and was hoping you knew, I didn't know about the dominant wolf's howl being the lowest, but I know that they use it for a rallying cry to gather the pack to hunt and to mark territory (warn others off). Also that others will join in spontaneously when playing.

Wolf howls have recently been cited in the greater New Haven area. They are typically heard only after 1 or 2AM, and it is suspected that they are the cry of inebriated wolves who are swimming in a pool.
I think it's around ten miles.
