Charles Darwin's book, "The Descent of Man", caused uproar when it was published in 1871. He said that people and chimpanzees shared a common ancestor. That is not to say that people descended from chimps, but some people got confused. Some even thought that it might work the other way and your grandchildren, or your nephew might be a chimp or a monkey. People jokingly said "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!" as an exclamation of surprise.
