It was directly triggered by the assasination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on June 28, 1914 by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip.
It was caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie by Gavrilo Princip. Austria then declared war on Serbia. Everyone else then got involved due to the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente.

=====

Long story but in a nutshell it is because some Serbian nationalist, apart with the balck hand killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophia from Austria-Hungary, prompting some countries to declare war, which then grew and grew in size because each sides gathered more and more allies. This is added with Nationalism, Militarism, and Imperialism. These three things are the UNDERLYING CAUSE, but the assassination is what lit the wood on fire.

There is no "the" cause of WWI. There is a variety of rising tensions that were produced as a result of great powers competing with each other.

For example, the naval race was a event which caused tensions between Britain and Germany. Britain had the best navy of all the Great Powers. Their navy was important to them as they were separated from the rest of Europe by water, and so they could defend through naval warfare. The German Kaiser, Wilhelm II wanted Germany "a place in the sun." Therefore, he tried to build a navy greater than Britain's. One could see why this would cause a tension between the two great powers.

There were many tensions like these that happened throughout the European nations, so that when a small spark was given off, the whole of Europe was at war. This little spark was the assassination of Duke Ferdinand of Austria.

People say that this assassination led directly to the Great War, but I personally do not think that the war would have been so widespread throughout Europe if all these tensions were there in the first place. Archduke Ferdinand or something like that got killed and the German ruler persuaded the Austrian ruler to take action and eventually the WW started

Before World War l, Africa and parts of Asia were points of contention among the European countries. This was especially true because of the raw materials these areas could provide. The increasing competition and desire for greater empires led to an increase in confrontation that helped push the world into World War l.

The explosive that was World War One had been long in the stockpiling; the spark was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo on 28th June 1914 by Gabrel Princip of the Black Hand - a Serbian Nationalist secret society involved in terrorist activities.

This set in motion a series of events that heightened tensions between Austria and Sarajevo, pulled other European countries into conflict, and culminated in the world's first global war.

iv. Germany declares war on Russia

v. Russia has alliance with France

vi. Germany attacks France through Belgium

vii. Belgium has treaty with Great Britain.

d. Imperialism: Germany wanted colonies in Africa that GB and France had. Only way to get them was to take them.

e. Militarism: Germany built its army up so strong that they were a threat to the rest of Europe.

The First World War was started by the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He and his wife were murdered by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist and member of the Black Hand Group, in response for the Austro-Hungarian annexation of Bosnia.

When Franz Joseph I of Austria found out that Serbia was behind the attack he ordered an invasion of Serbia. Serbia appealed to the Russian Empire for Help in which Russia agreed and began to move its forces to the Austro-Russian border and she demanded that Austro forces stand down. Then Germany stood in for Austria and it demanded that Russia de-mobilize its army - after no response, German forces started to march into Russia.

France, worried by all this, moved its army to the German border in the event of an attack, having lost to Germany in the Franco-Prussian war of 1871. Germany knew it would lose a two-front war and began preparations to attack France. Under the Schlieffen Plan Germany would pass through neutral Belgium and make a charge on Paris, forcing France out of the conflict. But Belgium refused to allow Germany to pass through, and Britain sent a warning to Germany to stop threatening Belgium.

Germany then invaded Belgium and as a result, Britain and its Empire nations (Australia Canada South Africa and New Zealand) declared war on Germany.

This in effect was the start of the First world War, as many other nations where forced into war as a result of these far-flung and extended alliances. These nations included Japan (ally of Britain) and the Ottoman Empire (ally of Germany).

The reasons the United States joined the war The sinking of the RMS Lusitania (1915) contributed to the US entry. It turned the majority of US public support against Germany (including German-Americans), but it did not immediately bring the US into the war, at least not until unrestricted submarine warfare was resumed in early 1917.

What brought the US into the war was the Zimmerman Telegram in which the German Empire attempted to bring Mexico into the war as part of the Central Powers. Germany could use Mexican ports for its U-boat warfare in US waters and Mexico would reclaim the land lost the US in the American-Mexican war of 1848 (California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas). Mexico declined, but the British revealed the telegram and it was widely circulated in the US press.

The Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was killed by a gang of assassins in July 1914.///(one man,Gavrilo Princip shot the Archduke and his wife on June 28th) When the killers escaped into Serbia, Austria-Hungary sent soldiers across the border to arrest them, effectively beginning World War 1.

Germany declared war on Russia -- which was allied with France and Britain -- when Russia mobilized to protect Serbia from an invasion by Austria-Hungary and its ally, Germany. Why did Russia come to the aid of the Serbs? Because the Serbs were Slavs and the Russians, also Slavs, saw themselves as protectors of Slavic peoples.

Why did Austria-Hungary want to invade Serbia? Archduke Franz Ferdinand was heir presumptive to the Austrian throne. In June, 1914, on a visit to Sarajevo, in Bosnia, a province of Austria-Hungary, he and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Bosnian Serb.

Austria-Hungary wanted revenge and presented Serbia with an ultimatum that it rejected. So, to teach the Serbs a lesson, at the end of July, 1914, it declared war on Serbia. Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire were allies.

Well, that was one of the triggers. Throughout the month of July and early August, there was all sorts of diplomatic wrangling and exchanges of messages among the future participants.

In any event, war would have come anyway. In 1903-5 Germany developed the Schleiffen plan to invade the Low Countries and France and attack Russia. The plan was changed in 1906, when Helmuth von Moltke succeeded Count Alfred Schleiffen as chief of the German general staff. Moltke altered the plan and, it is generally believed, weakened it (but that's another story).

The plan called for the invasion of Belgium. Britain had pledged to guarantee Belgium's neutrality. When Germany decided to invade Belgium, Britain declared war on Germany.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were killed. This happened on Sunday 28th June 1914. It was their wedding anniversary so it was the first time that Sophie was allowed to go out with him in a public procession type thing. Franz Ferdinand and his wife arrive at Sarajevo railway station as 9:30am. The duke and his wife get into a dark green open topped car which is the second in a line of six outside the station. A group called the black hand are at different positions along the route, armed with bombs and pistols and cyanide which is a poison so when they have shot him or thrown a bomb at it they will drink it so they die. The first two terrorists are on apple quay near the station and do nothing as they are too scared. The third terrorist, Nedjelko Cabrinovic, is on Cumurja bridge along apple quay. He throws a bomb which lands under the third car injuring the passengers and the driver. It missed the dukes care as once he pulled the pin out he forgot that it had a ten second delay so it missed the dukes car. He then drank the poison and jumped into a river to make sure he died. However the poison was so old it did not work and the river was only a few inches deep. The remaining five cars drove quickly to the town hall so the other three terrorists couldn't do anything. At the town hall it is decided that the duke and Sophie will return to the station via a different route, the driver is not told. The black hand have a secret meeting in the park and decide what to do, they were unsure so Gavrillo Princip decided to go an get a sandwich from Schillers delicatessen and cafe he stood outside eating this sandwich. The driver took a wrong turn and went up Franz Joseph street. That was where Princip was. So princip shot the duke and his wife. Princip is arrested by police and later beaten up in jail. This murder took place in Sarajevo in Bosnia. Sophie was pregnant and was shot in the stomach and the duke was shot in the neck. Then countries joined together to make the Entente and the Alliance and a war started. Militarism, alliances, imperialism and nationalism were also causes of world war one. They spell main. Militarism is building up armed forces and preparing for war, alliances is where countries agree or promise to defend and help Another Country. Imperialism is trying to build up an empire and nationalism is having pride in your country and wishing to defend it.
The world war ll was an embarassing accident to the whole world and there is nothing interesting or fun to talk about.
The World War 1 started because there was no unity in the countries of north Europe.
It was a long story, but in simple terms, the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in Serbia, then Germany joined Austria to help fight the Serbs, but the Serbs were friends with Russia, who joined to help the Serbs. OK so far? Russia was friends with France, who in turn was friends with Belgium and England, so it is a question of alliances set up pre 1914.
