Prior to December 1941, the USA was in an undeclared war against Germany. The USA was keeping the British fighting by supplying money, arms and oil to Germany's enemy. The USA was even firing on German naval forces, unprovoked. At one point a USA destroyer even machine gunned helpless German submariners in the North Atlantic waters, a slaughter that would have created a declaration of war by the USA had the massacre been reversed. It is thus not unsurprising that Hitler declared war against the USA in support of Japan after Pearl Harbor. He felt he was already at war. This was a golden opportunity for Hitler however, that he overlooked. Likely had he held his temper, the USA arms would have turned against Japan almost entirely to the detriment of Britain and Russia, both of which were kept fighting and mobile due to USA aid. To be more precise, it is unlikely Germany could have defeated either of these nations completely, but they could have reached a stalemate with them by 1944 had the USA not tipped the balance. In the Pacific the USA was actively engaged in supporting China, Japans primary enemy. Tensions grew steadily over several years, culminating in the USA taking the lead in cutting off all of Japans sources of petroleum. Japan thus had the stark choices of virtual surrender or fighting. They chose to fight and were crushed over a three and a half year campaign.
