The 1944 battle of Leyte Gulf was the battle to take the Gulf of Leyte. It was part of the Philippines campaign. During the battle, over 100 Japanese Kamikazes, filled with fuel and explosive, were used. They had to crash into ships in order to deal damage to them. Even if they were shot out of the sky, they could still deal great damage if they crash into a ship. The kinds of kamikazes I'm talking about now were small Japanese war planes, like A6M Zeroes, D3A Val's, and D4Y Judy's, with fuel and explosive filled in them. When a kamikaze spots it's target, it aims at it and heads for the deck. When a kamikaze hits the deck, the explosives explode, and the fuel burns, dealing massive damage to the target. The other kamikaze was the Ohkas. They were jets carried by a G4M Betty bomber. This jet goes 999 miles per hour! It's Japan's fastest plane. It's so fast, taking it out is impossible- unless ya got strong anti air weaponry. Although millions of kamikazes were used and eliminated lots of American warships, the battle of Leyte Gulf, it ended with American victory. Leyte Gulf was also a gulf in Leyte, in the Philippines, where the Philippine campaign took place.
