Following Germany's defeat in World War II, the country was divided into four zones that were run by the Allied nations: Britain, France, America, and the U.S.S.R. ( Its capital city, Berlin, was divided into 4 sectors that were run by the Allies). The Allied countries controlled the government in each of their respected zones of Germany to avoid another act of aggression.

The division was formalized at the Potsdam Conference (July 17-August 2, 1945). The purpose of this division was to implement the decisions made at the conference in Yalta on Feb 4 - 11 1945. These decisions were to divide Germany into 4 occupational zones under a unified control commission. Each country would control a part of Germany until its sovereignty was restored. They wanted to make sure that the Nazi party would not regain control and reestablish their military.
