In New Zealand, two people can marry if:

  • they are at least 18 years old (or 16 or 17 years old with parental consent)
  • the two people are not closely related (see the related link for further detail on this)
  • they are not already married or in a civil union
  • they are of the opposite sex
Two people can join in a civil union if they meet the first three of the above criteria.
Civil Unions may be entered into by couples of the same sex.

New Zealanders can marry or enter into civil unions outside New Zealand. Most marriages and civil unions that are conducted according to the laws of the country in which they occur are recognized in New Zealand.
