Toto doesn't die in 'The Wizard of Oz' or in any later books. Dorothy Gale relocates her pet dog and both Uncle Henry and Aunt Em to the Emerald City of Oz, later on in the Royal Histories of Oz books by author and series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919]. Dorothy becomes a Princess, and Toto even has an honorary statue made in his likeness during his lifetime.

Terry [1933-1944] was the black Cairn Terrier who played Toto in the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz. She was paid$125.00 a week for her acting in the movie. She attended the premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theater, in 1939. She had a film career before, and after, her participation in The Wizard of Oz. Her 13-film career began in 1934, with Ready for Love, and as Rags in Bright Eyes with Shirley Jane Temple [b. April 23, 1928]. Among her last roles were Calling Philo Vance, in 1940; and George Washington Slept Here, in 1942. In 1942, owner/trainer Carl Spitz [August 26, 1894-September 15, 1976] changed her name to Toto, what with her own popularity from the movie, and the film's lasting appeal. She was buried in an area that was set aside for pets, behind the Spitz residence and kennel. Decades later, the buildings and grounds were razed, to make space for the expanded Ventura Freeway in Los Angeles, California.
