After a long and successful career on television including the hit series The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, Andy Griffith passed away on July 3, 2012, at the age of 86 from a heart attack. He died at his home on Roanoke Island, North Carolina and was buried in the Griffith Family Cemetery on the island within five hours of his death.
