Ther are no snakes, poisonous or otherwise, in Aotearoa New Zealand. Very, very rarely an Australian yellow bellied sea snake (very venomous) will get washed up on our shores but they are always dead or dying.

About the most poisonous native animal in New Zealand is a very small spider called the Katipo, but it is very rare to see this spider so being bite by one is even more rare and it would only amount to something like a bad bee sting.

However Australia certainly has a large array of dangerous animals, but that is no where near to New Zealand to worry it.

The Katipo spider .

The only native NZ spider is the Katipo, though it is very rare to see one. We do have some poisonous spiders that have made it over from Australia (cargo ships etc) which are the white tail and the redbacks......they may be poisonous but not overly lethal unless you are allergic to things like bee stings etc.
The Katipo spider (Latrodectus katipo) is related to the Australian redback and the American black widow.
the Katipo spider is an indigenous one related to the Black Widow of America, and the Australian Redback. No deaths have been reported for over a hundred years.

Recently introduced (~30 years) is the Australian Redback,a similar species to Katipo, and more recently again, (<20 yrs) the White Tailed spider, also from Aus.

Is newzealand the only snakeless country?

Millions of years ago, there were snakes in what is now New Zealand. A combination of the ice-age and New Zealand's disconnection from the 'mainland', has resulted in the extinction and non-return of all land snakes. Notice, I say land snakes, because, in fact, New Zealand does get the occasional but rare visit from sea snakes.
