The Far Side, created by Gary Larson, was first published on 1 January, 1980. The comic was published in more than 1900 daily newspapers during it's span, and translated into 17 different languages. It ran until 1 January, 1995, with some newspapers still publishing re-runs today. Gary Larson also published 23 Far Side books, with the first, simply titled "The Far Side", hitting shelves in September, 1982. All 23 books made it onto the New York Times best seller list. The last book was published in August, 2003, and was titled "The Complete Far Side: 1980 -1994". In 1994 "Tales from the Far Side", an animated series, was produced for television, with a sequel in 1997.

Unfortunately the literal first person who made the first cartoon has been lost to history.

Additionally, it may be available on websites that feature his cartoons or in online archives dedicated to The Far Side. Check libraries or bookstores for compilations of his cartoons as well.
