Where did Bernard go in the Santa Claus 3?

Bernard was the arch-elf in THE Santa Claus movies. He appeared in the first and second movies. However, much to the fans dismay, he did not appear in the third. Due to a confusion of contracts, Curtis (the elf previously second in command in previous movies) became arch-elf. The only mention of Bernard was when Santa spoke very seriously to Curtis about him being Bernard's succeser. I think he grew old (he was 1400) and died.

I've seen all theories saying that he died since he was old but here's a light-hearted one: I think he stepped down from being head elf and went to the real world as one of the elf's who pretended to be human. There he met someone special and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her(or him) and elf's can age outside of the north pole, so he retired to grow up with her/
