Hi there. I just bought a beautiful lyre in a thrift store for $2. It was gritty dirty but I have mostly cleaned it up. I have been researching it and have found that is is most often strummed with a pick or a plebum (I think it is called). It can also be plucked much as a harp.
I hope to learn more at a music store I will visit next week.
It can be played more like a xylophone, but it looks a little bit different....

A Lutea lute can refer generally to any plucked string instrument with a neck (either fretted or unfretted) and a deep round back, or more specifically to an instrument from the family of European lutes.
An angel lute is another name for an angelique, a plucked bowl lute with two necks and 16 strings, which is played in the manner of a harp.
The homophone for "loot" is "lute."
