Yes he was a very kind man. He fought for peace and equality. He wasn't the best father in the 60's but he turned himself around when he opened his life to peace.

Most people who knew Lennon well describe him as having big mood swings; he could be generous - throughout his life he was remarkably fair - charming, self-critical and witty.

He could also be deeply unpleasant; there are several stories about him becoming very aggressive when drunk, he "picked" on what he described as "thick" people.

Partly, the aggressive part of his nature can be understood because during his teenage years, his adoptive father (his Uncle George) died unexpectedly, and his mother Julia was killed in a road accident - he found this very difficult to cope with.

The other thing about Lennon was that he was very clever; clever people are often impatient with "normal" people - they have to spend a lot of time waiting for them to catch up with their thoughts.

Lennon's first national news coverage in Britain came after he beat up Bob Wooler (MC at the Cavern Club) in a drunken rage, after Wooler made an off-color joke about Lennon's recent vacation with manager Brian Epstein. He issued a public apology, and paid Wooler's hospital expenses. (He thereafter renounced violence.)

Lennon also lost the support of a group of shareholders, who held a crucial block of shares in Northern Songs (The Beatles' publishing company), when he made a crass remark about their possibly trying to influence him or his music. Word got out, the shareholders sold their stock to Sir Lew Grade's Associated TeleVision (giving ATV the majority of shares), and the Beatles lost control of Northern Songs.
