His music varied greatly. He had a distinctive voice that was silky with a raspy note. Check him out on YouTube. I'd say if you could only listen to two songs to get an idea of how he began and how he ended, listen first to twist and shout (pay attention to his energy--very Kurt cobainish) and then listen to imagine (pay attention to what he is saying). Remember, he was just a poor guy from Liverpool.

I never even noticed at the time, growing up in the 60s, that there are two Beatles records: Johns & Pauls: they are very different & both very listenable to, even now, all those years later. But if you want sharp, raspish, thought-provoking lyrics then John is for you. Paul is smoother & more commercial. But, & you have to listen carefully, because they are all Lennon & McCartney, the difference is there to be heard. To me, a personal view, Lennon is all about lyrics which proke thought. Sadly an idiot who deserves no more than to die in jail took him from this world. And they talk about crimes against Humanity.......................................
