Many composers have written 5 symphonies but I think you are referring to the famous fifth symphony of Ludvig van Beethoven, normally referred to as Beethoven's Fifth. The opening notes were used by the BBC during the World War II to represent the letter V (for victory) - a great piece of irony on someone's part as Beethoven was German.
