Personification is the method of describing a "non-person" thing using "person" descriptors. To do this in regards to storms with thunder, you need to decide what thing is to be personified, then describe it as if it were a person with feelings or intent. Then your sentences might go like this:

"The heavy storm clouds grumbled and argued; mumbling angrily at each other as if spoiling for a fight."

"Two huge dark clouds arose in the sky, puffing themselves up and trying to threaten one another into backing down before a real thunderous fight began."

If you're trying to describe just the thunder by itself, you could say it something like this:

"Spawned from a darkening cloud that towered in the evening sky, the rolling waves of thunder hurried into the city where it playfully rattled windows and frightened children.
