Well a lot of people will tell ya a lot of things! Especially about songs & meanings! "The Wind Cries Mary" was influenced by at least 2 people that I know! Jimi Hendrix played and studied many musicians from the known to thee unknown! One being a friend/fellow musician/someone Jimi looked up to and admired for many reasons was Mr. Curtis Mayfield! The 2nd & the best all around answer though is that it was influenced by Jimi's girlfriend Miss. Kathy Etchingham! Jimi & her were home one day/night and got into a stupid disagreement over how something was being cooked or simply what was being cooked & Kathy whose middle name is Mary left their flat in London I believe is where it happened & Sir Mr. James Marshall Hendrix commenced to write "The Wind Cries Mary" that night! Kathy made it clear even before this night of their disagreement that she did not want mentioned directly in any songs that Jimi may write and Jimi being the gentleman that is is/was respected her wishes! Although he wrote more than just one song for and about her he never ever mentioned her as the rest of the world knew her by & like I said he always respected her wishes! BTW Please do not believe thee upcoming biopic about Jimi coming that john ridley has made! Its due out in the theaters next month but may face a delay and/or possibly not be able to even see a release day!
