Micky Dolenz sang lead vocals on the majority of the Monkees' songs; Dolenz was considered by producers Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart to have the most commercial-sounding singing voice. Davy Jones considered himself "a song-and-dance man playing the part of a rock'n'roll singer", and was a close second on vocal duties.

Nesmith sang on many of his own compositions, but gave vocal duties to Dolenz for some of them. Peter Tork was the most musically-accomplished band member (playing a dozen different instruments), but was considered to have the weakest singing voice, and was usually kept in the background.

Peter Tork was shown playing the bass on the television show. However on the Monkees' two major albums (Headquarters and Pisces Aquarius Capricorn and Jones Ltd) the bass was played by producer Chip Douglas.

Micky Dolenz.

AnswerThe Monkees had no permanent lead singer. Mike Nesmith, Mickey Dolenz, and Davy Jones took turns on lead vocals, and Peter Tork even sang lead on "Auntie Grizelda," although he was much better with a guitar than with a voice box.
