Why is the music called Fur Elise?

In 1810, Beethoven composed the Bagatelle in A minor that became known as "Für Elise" for Therese Malfatti. This was the one whom Beethoven was considering marrying at that time, but the marriage never eventuated. There is some question as to whether the name Elise was simply a nickname for Therese, or whether the publisher could not read Beethoven's handwriting.

This composition was discovered 40 years after Bethoven's death. Nobody knows who Elise was but most historians agree like me that Ludwig Nohl the composition discoverer mistraslated the name since Beethoven's handwriting is hard to decipher and the real name is Für Therese. Bethoven proposed to Therese Malfatti in 1810.

There is a theory that this piece was written to Elisabeth Röckel's tribute. She was a well known soprano of the era and Bethoven's friend since 1808. This theory has been debunked by historians. The dates don't match and probably Bethoven kept it hidden because Therese married someone else so I go with the Therese theory.

Whoever she may have been, Für Elise simply means "for Elise."
