it depend on endothermic and exothermic reactions . whenever bonds are breaked to form new products energy is absorbed e.g CaCO3 break down to CaO and CO2 if u heat it but on the other hand bond forming is the process in which heat is released e.g when Na and Cl combines energy is released and the product formed is NaCl .
