Venus was named after the Roman goddess of love, beauty, sex, fertility, prosperity, and military victory. The symbol is the same as the symbol in Biology for the female sex, i.e. the circle with the small cross under it. The symbol also stood for femininity, and the alchemists understood the symbol to mean copper. This is important as polished copper has been used over the ages as a mirror, and the symbol sometimes stands for the "mirror of the goddess".
