Rome was located near the Alps and was on a steep hill, so it was tougher for invasions to occur. Rome also wasn't close to the sea, so pirate attacks weren't imminent.
What was most useful in the early days of Rome was that she lied by the only Ford on the river Tiber. Since this river run from the Apennines Mountains to the sea, this location made early Rome the main north-south communication point in the region, which was useful for trade. When Rome became more engaged in sea trade, the Tiber provided a navigable link with the sea. The third king of Rome (Ancus Marcius), built a port on the river (Portus Tiberinus) in the 5th century BC. The Romans built a port at Ostia, on the coast, by the mouth of the river (Ostia in Latin means mouth) probably in the 3rd century BC. Large ships which sailed across the Mediterranean unloaded their goods here. The goods were then loaded on smaller ships which reached Rome by sailing up the Tiber. This was vital to secure the massive amount of imports which Rome needed to supply his large population.

Rome was also on hills (the Seven Hills of Rome). People liked to live on hills because they gave better protection against raids. The hills also were made of volcanic rock, which provided good building material. Rome was also quite close to the Apennines (a mountain range which runs through the Italian peninsula) which have plenty of water sources. The water was taken to Rome by aqueducts.

As a land between two rivers, Meso-P was blessed by the annual floods that deposited fertile silt over the land allowing for abundant crops. With food surpluses, the people of the region were able to dedicate time to non-food producing endeavors such as building, arts, religion, etc. These would be the foundations of a civilization.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the floods in Meso-P (compared to the regular flooding of the Nile in Egypt), Meso religion reflected a world view that the Gods were unpredictable. This presented a sense that one had to seek fortune in this life, 'cause there were no guarantees of rewards in the next life.

Practices of religion reflected the organiozation of the state. As kingship developed, the common man felt removed from those in authority. One couldn't go up and ask the king a question...therefore, one couldn't approach the gods either. Gods were addressed through intermediaries like priest and, later, through lesser, personal gods that could appeal to the major dieties on the supplicant's behalf.

The Apennines mountains were to the east of Rome which blocked any possible invaders from invading from the east--at least until Hannibal (248-183 BC) came with his troops. The alps were north of Italy which also could have stopped any possible invaders. Rome had developed a very strong navy so they were set.

The limited arable land in Greece and surging population meant that they had so ship surplus populations away to seize new land for themselves and establish new city-states. This way over 2,000 Greek city-states were established around the Mediterranean and Black Sea littorals.
