Animals in the grasslands have many adaptations. Giraffes have long necks to reach high trees. Animals can go without water for a while because grasslands don’t get much rain, and they can survive dry windy conditions. Cheetahs have great speed to run from predators. Snakes have a sharp sense of smell. Bison and elk have horns and antlers to fight predators.

This ecosystem is Grasslands. Grasslands are areas where the vegetation is dominated by grass and other plants. Natural Grasslands are between -20 and 30. Grasslands have cold winters and warm summers with rain and some snow. Vegetation can range from quite small - 30cm - to quite tall. Grasslands occur naturally on all continents except Antarctica. In many parts of the world "unimproved" grasslands are one of the most threatened habitats.Bio-diversity:Grasslands dominated by unsown wild-plant communities can be called either natural or 'semi-natural' habitats. The majority of grasslands in temperate climates are 'semi-natural'. Although their plant communities are natural, their maintenance depends on low-intensity farming, which maintains these grasslands through grazing and cutting. These grasslands contain many species of wild plants - grasses, sedges, rushes and herbs - 25 or more species per square metre is not unusual. Agriculturally improved grasslands, which dominate agricultural landscapes, are usually poor in wild plant species due to the original diversity of plants having been destroyed by cultivation. In many parts of the world grasslands are one of the most threatened habitats.Plants and animals:There is a big population of species that live in the Grassland community and are adapted to their habitat. They are adapted to living where the summers are long and hot, rain is sparse and winters are cold and quite dry. Many species are also herbivores. Some animals graze on grass such as sheep, mice and Grouse.THE ELEPHANTThe African Elephant for example lives mostly in grassland habitats. The Asian Elephant also tends to stick to grasslands. African Elephants live in the grasslands of Africa. The elephant is the largest land mammal. There are two elephant species in the world: the Asian elephant and the African elephant. Asian elephants inhabit open grasslands, savannas and tropical rainforests. They live in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Burma and Malaysia. The African elephant lives in forests and grasslands of central, southern, and eastern Africa. African elephants are larger than their Asian relatives. They also have larger ears. The African elephant can weigh 16,000 pounds. Asian elephants are currently listed as endangered, while African elephants are considered threatened species.THE BISONAlthough there were once millions of bison roaming the North America grasslands, slaughter by the early European settlers brought them almost to extinction by the beginning of the 12th century. The bison are around nine and half feet tall. Male are usually brownish black. Females are usually reddish brown and are little smaller than the males.THE GIRAFFEThe giraffe is a large animal that ranges from nine and three-fourths to thirteen feet. The giraffe is part of the giraffidae: giraffe family. They eat buds and fruit from trees. Females carry a baby for four hundred to four hundred sixty eight days, which is called the gestation period. Young baby giraffes suckle for six to twelve months. The baby giraffe continues to grow for the next ten years of its young life. They have very long blue tongues so they can curl them round the tallest branches.

THE OSTRICH

The ostrich is too big to fly but has become so perfectly adapted to high-speed running that it is the fastest creature on two legs. At speeds of up to 44 mph, it can easily outrun most enemies. Powerful legs, flexible knees and supple, two-toed feet are its adaptations for speed. The male has soft, curling plumes. Female birds are slightly smaller than males and have brownish plumage and off-white wings and tails. Ostriches eat mostly but occasionally feed on small reptiles.GRASSES AND PLANTSGrasses are adapted to hot, dry areas: they have long, narrow leaves that lose less water than larger leaves do and their root systems go down so deep so that they can acquire water even during drought conditions.Fifty percent of the plants in any grassland will be grasses, making them the most common type of plant present. The other fifty percent is made up of what are often called 'forbs'. 'Forbs' are what many people think of as 'wildflowers', such as coneflowers, lupines and milkweed.
