The entire surface of the amoeba is its respiratory surface. It is always wet because the amoeba lives in water, and oxygen continually diffuses in and carbon dioxide continually diffuses out.

amoeba has no special respiratory organs or pigments in its body as it is a single celled organism. Therefore,it has a general body surface which is permeable to the gases dissolved in water.oxygen is constantly diffused in the cytoplasm of the cell as its concentration in water is always higher than in the cytoplasm.this oxygen helps in breaking down of complex food substances that the amoeba takes in like carbohydrates, fats and even proteins and converting into simler compounds.the energy released is then stored in high energy bond adenosine tri phosphate(ATP) which also helps in the formation of metabolic wastes.in amoeba the by product of oxidation of amoeba is ammonia.carbon dioxide and ammonia are excreted out by diffusion in the surrounding water as well as the water released by contractile vacuole.thus we conclude that respirartion in amoeba takes place through the process of diffusion.
