Exercising is very good for helping the respiratory system. First, when you exercise, you are taking in air at a faster rate, which opens the airways. It's almost like stretching your lung and heart muscles. Just like any other muscle, the diagram and heart require stretching to not "pull" or "strain" the muscle which could lead to chest pain. Also, exercising gets the heart pumping. This provides more blood to all of the parts of the body especially the exercise muscle. Having good blood circulation helps ease breathing and the pumping of the heart. The respiratory system does into do anything much different except for having a different amount of air flow.
