Yes you can grow a pumpkin from the seeds of a purchased pumpkin as long as the seeds are ripe, dry, clean and have not been cooked. Since commercial pumpkins are hybrids, the seed may not produce the same pumpkin variety as the original fruit you start with. They will, if successful, produce a lot of pumpkins. One seed becomes one pumpkin vine, and one vine can grow several pumpkins. If one pumpkin is left on the vine after harvest season, its seeds are likely to produce a great many vines, and pumpkins, the next season. If this is not wanted, care should be taken to ensure that all pumpkins are removed from the vine, including the little ones that may seem to be useless.

There are several depending factors such as space, soil, and sunlight. The average number of pumpkins grown out of one seed is somewhere between 10-15. ==== The amount of pumpkins that grow out of one seed differs from one type of pumpkin to another. Baby Pam pumpkins you may get 10 to 15 pumpkins of course you should plant three seeds at a time. Gigantic Atlantic Pumpkins you may get three or four pumpklins but if growing Gigantic Alantic Pumpkins for size or competition you would allow pumpkins to grow to about bowling ball size and decide which one looks the best for growing and then after these 3 or 4 pumpkins cut the others, just do not allow anymore pumpkins to grow. One pumpkin on a vine. When you grow for size one may gain a couple of hundred pounds with one pumpkin on it instead of three or four pumpkins. My personal best was 543 lbs. No where near the world record of 1700+ pounds.
