Human excretory organs » The ureters » General characteristics The ureters are narrow, thick-walled ducts, about 25-30 centimetres (9.8-11.8 inches) in length and from four to five millimetres (0.16 to 0.2 inch) in diameter, that transport the urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder. Throughout their course they lie behind the peritoneum, the lining of the abdomen and pelvis, and are attached to it by connective tissue.
