It appears by the wording of your question you are looking for an opinion. Of all that I have read about Amerigo I never read any "bad" things about him so I would say he was "good". Also, without him, there is no telling what the New World would have been named. I kind of like the name "Americas".

He wasn't a hero. A hero saves someone or does something exceptional and he didn't . In fact, he lied about what he did do. The English Explorers Society proved in 1889 that his account of finding North America was a lie. A hero doesn't lie or make himself bigger than he is in life.

What he did contribute was the insight that the America was a new continent, as his maps indicated, aiding navigation to and from the New World.
