Two common photosynthesis systems operate in plants, the so-called C3 and C4 systems. Not in the same plant. Called so by the number of carbon atoms in the chemistry of the reaction.

There is a less common photosynthesis system called CAM (after the names in the mechanism) and this is found in tropical/desert plants and in some epiphytes. These plants have to conserve water, so their stomata; used to breathe; open at night, and they store up the CO2 for reaction during the day when their stomata are closed.
