Hi,

Iodoform test is used for the detection of methyl ketones as methyl ketones give positive iodoform test. In this test, methyl ketone is treated with iodine (I2) in the presence of base such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to give iodoform(CHI3 - a light yellow coloured ppt).

Chemistry of iodoform test is:

Secondary alcohols also give positive iodoform test because during the reaction conditions, it gets oxidized to a methyl ketone.
