Depends greatly where you live.

Northern Japan, Hokkaido, average temperatures both day and night are below freezing from around Decemeber through March can get as low as nearly -30oC in some parts, but even the city of sapporo will see temperatures at night down to -10oC and day temps not getting above freezing, Many parts of hokkaido will have below freezing temps at night until well into May or even June.

Mainland northern Japan is also cold but less severe than Hokkaido.

The middle areas of Japan average around 0oC at night minimum in Tokyo to as low as -20oC in the higher mountains. Day temperatures for Tokyo tend to be around the 9oC mark in winter with the mountain areas being colder.

Southern parts of Japan, Kyushu, Shikoku tend to remain above zero and are relatively warm in winter, with the exception of the tallest mountains which do receive some snow.

Okinawa far southern Japanese island is very warm in winter with temperatures typically around the 20oC mark even at night.
