Sediments are solid fragments of inorganic or organic material that come from the weathering of rock and the life processes of organisms.

Sediments are carried by the agents of erosion (wind, moving water, gravity, ice), and are deposited as friction and gravity overcome the force of the agent carrying them Where they are deposited depends on the agent of erosion. Glacial drift, sand dunes, gravel bars, loess, beach sand, and silt at the bottom of lakes are all examples of deposited sediments.

A sedimentary rock is one that is formed by the accumulation of small to large sediment particles and undergoes compaction, cementation or evaporation from a saturated mineral solution. Sedimentary rock is classified as organic, (derived from organisms), clastic (formed from any size particle of pre-existing rock), or non-clastic (also referred to as chemical), where the sedimentary rock is formed from the evaporation of a solution that is saturated with mineral compounds. Examples of organic sedimentary rocks are coal and limestone. Examples of clastic sedimentary rocks are conglomerate and shale. Examples of non-clastic or chemical sedimentary rocks are rock gypsum and rock salt.

Why is there a difference between rocks?

The difference lies in the method of the rock's creation (melting, sediment, pressure), and the elements available when and where it forms.

Is there a difference between residue on ignition vs. residue on evaporation?

Yes. The residue left is material that did not ignite or products of the ignition reaction. The residue remaining after evaporation is the non-volatile substances in the solutionsubjected to the evaporation.
