What is the line that divides east and and west?

The lines that circle the Earth east and west are latitude lines, also called parallels. Lines of latitude include points that have the same distance from a pole, and the same angular measurement to the equator. On a map, they can be said to be "horizontal" lines, and include the equator (0° latitude), the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the Arctic and Antarctic Circles.

The Prime (or Greenwich) meridean.

Think of a giant circle on the Earth. Half of it is the Prime Meridian, from pole to

pole through London. The other half is the meridian of 180 degrees longitude,

from pole to pole down the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

If you cut the Earth down through this circle, the two halves would roll away from

each other in opposite directions, like two halves of a grapefruit.

The half with North America, South America, the US, Brazil, Cuba, and Jamaica on it,

plus Ireland, a small piece of Spain, and part of Africa all along one edge, is the

Western half (Hemisphere).

The half with Asia, most of Africa, most of Europe, the "Middle East", Russia, China,

Australia, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines, and most of the Pacific Islands

on it, is the Eastern Hemisphere.

Antarctica is a big, jagged "cap" that covers the south Pole and extends

hundreds of miles from the pole in every direction. Roughly half of Antarctica

winds up on each hemisphere.
