Double-glazing can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 50%. 20mm is the optimum space between the 2 panes of glass; less than this leads to increased heat loss; more than this makes little difference to the level of thermal insulation but does give improved sound insulation.

The air that would normally be trapped between the two panes of glass is replaced by a less dense gas - usually argon. The lower density reduces the heat loss. Additionally, the glass facing inside the house is coated in a microscopic layer of reflective material. This 'bounces' the heat back into the room.

The air, known as dead air, is what makes double glazed windows more insulated. This air gets trapped between the pains, not allowing hot or cold air to transfer.
