An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. This is because the distance of the moon from earth varies. The Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon.

The Moon's orbit isn't a circle; it is an ellipse, with the Moon sometimes closer and sometimes farther away.

When a solar eclipse happens, the Moon blocks the Sun's light, and the Moon's shadow hits the Earth. But if the Moon is near apogee, when it is close to being as far away from the Earth as it ever gets, then the Moon appears to be too small to block the entire Sun during an eclipse. So we get an "annular" eclipse, when the Sun appears to be a ring around the Moon.
