"1520s (implied in puppetry), from O. Fr. poupette, dim. of poupée 'doll.' (13c.), from V.L. puppa, from L. pupa 'girl, doll'. Metaphoric extension to 'person whose actions are manipulated by another' first recorded 1540s."
