It's actually pretty easy if you break it down into steps Step1: Put you right foot behind your left foot (not lined up) and there should be about 3-6 inches between them width wise. Step 2: Put your right foot on its tip toes. tip:the higher your heel is the smoother the move will look. Step 3: Slide your left foot as if you were trying to brace yourself behind your right foot Step 4: Snap your left heel in the air and your right heel down AT THE SAME TIME! very important So your feet are reversed from step 1 and repeat as said.

Here are the instructions to do the moonwalk.
You drag your feet while you are going backwards. And if you are in anyway confused watch the "25th anniversary Motown performance " which is on the "Thriller 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" album. ( The album is a CD/DVD set & costs fluctuate depending on the store. Target sells it for around $15.00-$16.00.)
One way you can learn to do the moonwalk is wear the grips out of your shoes a bit so when you attempt the moonwalk, it will be a lot more smoother.
The first step to doing the moonwalk is to start by pointing your left toes vertically down towards the floor and your right toes and foot to be flat.
Then, you push your right foot back and lift your right toes up and as you do that pull your left foot along in-line with your right foot.
Repeat this step over and over again and you will be able to do the moonwalk, just keep on practicing and you will soon be very smooth at doing it.
For years, people have wanted to do the moonwalk dance just like its creator, Michael Jackson. However, doing the dance is easier said than done. When it was first created, the moonwalk was way ahead of its time. In fact, many popular choreographers could not imitate the Michael's signature dance move until months, even years later.
This article will explain in detail how to do the moonwalk. However, this instruction will not be useful unless you practice the steps. You may also want a visual guide of the moonwalk for further help.
Keep your feet togetherYour feet should be close together without touching each other -- approximately 12 inches spread apart. Additionally, since the focus of the move is on your feet, keep your body very still or positioned.
Practice moving your feet backwardsThe moonwalk gives the illusion that you are walking forward, even though you are moving backwards. To perform the illusion, one foot must be stationary and elevated while the other foot is moving backwards.
Elevate your feet as high as possibleThe higher your foot is elevated, the more effect the dance move has. Wear pants that do not cover the shoe, and wear shoes that have strong features. The viewers should be able to completely see both of your feet. Your heels should be as high in the air as possible.
Keep the backward moving foot slightly off of the groundThough you don't want your moving foot to come too high off of the ground, you will have a hard time sliding your feet backwards if they are touching the ground. Additionally, place your center of weight on the elevated foot to keep your balance.
Practice in front of a mirror. Many people have incorrect form when dancing unless they practice their dance moves in front of a mirror. Use a pushing forcePhysics play a large role in the moonwalk. If you do not exhibit proper stance, force and balance, you will not perform the moonwalk the way it was meant to be performed. The only force you should be using is the leg that walks backwards. Do not put the force in your foot; rather, keep your leg as straight as possible, and move it backwards in a fluent motion.
The Moonwalk, one of the most well-known dance moves of all time, is not as tough as it appears. Perform the Moonwalk with the right techniques and a few smooth and simple moves.
Make sure you're learning on the proper surface. A smooth floor combined with soft socks will help immensely. The Moonwalk is most easily performed on a smooth floor, such as hardwood or tile, but carpet can be used if it is low enough. Avoid shoes that offer grip, opting for socks or stockings instead. Start by placing feet together, not quite shoulder width apart. Move your right foot back until the toes of that foot come to the middle of the left foot. If it is more comfortable, experiment with moving your right foot back a little farther. The placement during this step is not strict. Next, lift your right heel so that your weight pushes down on the ball of your right foot while your left foot stays flat. Make sure that your right knee is bent and that all weight is on this side.
Next, slide your left foot back as you simultaneously lower your right heel. Your feet should be moving at the same speed as one another. Remember to keep your left leg straight and the foot flat on the floor as it slides. Stop when the toes of the left foot are lined up with the heel of the right. Once again, experiment a bit with this placement for your comfort and preference. When your left foot is sliding, do not push down on it with your body weight, as this will hinder the sliding motion. By the end of this move, your left heel should lift just barely off the floor. Practice this move over and over again until you can execute it smoothly.
Repeat these steps, alternating between your two feet. Execute the moves slowly at first to ensure proper technique. For additional assistance and inspiration, tune to some classic music videos in which the Moonwalk is featured and executed professionally. The more you practice, the better your dance moves will be.
