In Act II, scene ii (the "balcony scene") of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says: 'Deny thy father and refuse thy name; / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I'll no longer be a Capulet" (2.2.34-36). (Juliet is a Capulet; the Capulet and Montague families hate each other.) Later, she says, "'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; / Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. / What's Montague?" (2.2.38-40). Romeo eventually responds that if Juliet does not want him to be called Romeo or Montague, he will be "Neither, fair saint, if either thee dislike" (2.2.61).
