Basically, Shakespeare wrote all of his plays because it was his job. A successful play put money in his pocket, and Shakespeare was acutely focused on money.
But why this particular play? Some view the play as a homage to King James I, who was reputed to be the descendant of Banquo through his son, Fleance. The story is from Holinshed's Chronicle which Shakespeare used many times as a source; Shakespeare did not tweak it to flatter the Stuarts (Holinshed's sources had already done that). Very probably, Shakespeare saw possibilities in the story of exploring the things we love about the play: guilt, inducing another person to commit a crime, paranoia, madness, what makes a good leader of a country, the effects of unlawful seizure of power, fate and predestination, the supernatural.

Shakespeare got his plot for Macbeth from Holinshed's Chronicles, which is a history book, not a play. Parts of The Witch by Thomas Middleton were lifted from that rather unsuccessful play and plopped down into the middle of Macbeth, but it is suspected that this was not done by Shakespeare but by some later editor.
