In the play Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is thirteen, turning 14. (The common assumption is that back then girls typically married around 13 years old and had children. But actually in Shakespeare's time, girls did not usually marry until their mid-twenties.) Some people say that Romeo is supposed to be around 17, or 16, or sometimes 15 or 18. The disagreement is because it nowhere says in the play how old Romeo is, so all of these ages are complete guesswork.

While Juliet is "a fortnight and odd days" from her 14th birthday. Romeo is something of an accomplished swordsman, so he is unlikely to be 14-17 himself. He takes on Tybalt, the "king of cats," (meaning an excellent swordsman) and kills him immediately--despite the movie version of the play, which has the two fighting for a good 10 minutes. Also, at the end of the play he fights and kills Paris with a sword.

Likely Romeo was at least 18 and quite possibly in his early 20's. Shakespeare probably gloated over this discussion 400 years ago.

From dialogue in the play, we know that Juliet is 13 years old. While we know that romeo is older, we have no reference to indicate how much older he is. His age other than older than Juliet is all that can be determined.

It can be surmised that he is prepubescent.
