Up to now, in the US, spent fuel rods have been stored on the power station sites, in water filled stores. There are plans to use an underground national store at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, but this has not so far been used due to legal challenges.

In the UK spent fuel has been transferred to a national facility at Sellafield in Cumbria. This operated for many years dealing with spent Magnox fuel, separating the fission products from depleted uranium, and plutonium. Spent fuel from the AGR reactors is also sent to Sellafield.

Nuclear fuel rods are assembled into what is called a fuel bundle. It is a group or small "assembly" of rods or plates welded together. We take the fuel bundles and assemble them into one single structure - the reactor core. When the fuel is unused, the bundle can sit on the floor. But used fuel is extremely radioactive, and it gives of heat all the time because of radioactive decay. Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) must be stored in a tank of some kind and immersed in water. The idea of a swimming pool as a storage tank is common. At a point when the fuel bundles have cooled enough, they can be sealed inside a caskand transported by truck or by rail to permanent repositories.
