This force can be calculated two ways:

  1. Use the Universal Gravitational force formula: F = G(m1me)/r2 (where G is a constant of 6.67 x 10-11, m1 is the mass of the object, me is the mass of the earth and r is the distance between the center of mass of the object and the center of the earth.)
  2. Use Newton's Second Law of Motion: F = ma (where m is the mass of the object and a is the acceleration due to gravity which equals -9.8 m/s2)

Use #1 if the object is in outer space and use #2 if the object is on earth or relatively close to the earth's surface.

Note: The gravitational attraction is mutual. It accelerates the earth and the object toward each other, a negligible consideration in most cases, but is taken into account by formula #1.
