You can lubricate the machine with lubricants that have lower coefficients of friction.

You can make parts of the machine lighter, so the motor doesn't have to work so hard to move the parts.


You can put a more efficient motor on the machine.


It would help if we knew what the machine was and what you want to improve on it, because some efficiencies conflict with each other. A quick example is a tractor-trailer. If we decided that a more efficient truck was one that hauled more freight and the freight we were hauling wasn't very heavy, we could add a second trailer to the truck. If a more efficient truck is one that hauls freight faster, we could trade in the tractor for one with a more powerful engine in it. But if a more efficient truck is one that uses less fuel, we could add sideskirts to the trailer, buy high efficiency tires and not take loads that route us through the mountains.
