An insulator is used to separate two environments. In engineering, generally considered under Heat, Sound, and Electrical.

Thermal Insulators are poor conductors of thermal energy. They generally have low thermal mass, and poor thermal conductivity.

(There is a sub-class where reflectance is the operative mechanism. )

Fibrous materials such as fibreglass and asbestos are examples of this. Natural materials such as wool and feathers, particularly down, are also very good.

Of course, if there is no mechanical contact, there can be no thermal conductivity, and the vacuum in a vacuum flask demonstrates this.

Sound Insulators depend on a very different mechanism. If the sound conduction path is interrupted, then little of the sound will be transmitted. So a good Sound Barrier will have properties very different from the properties of air. The important characteristics are the spring and the mass of the material. So a concrete wall or a wall made of gypsum wallboard will have good sound barrier properties, and may reduce the sound energy by 10^5 or better.

Sound absorbers on the other hand are fibrous, porous materials that stop reflection of sound within a room. They may be able to reduce the sound level within a room by 10^2, but more commonly 10^1. They have a very different application to Sound barriers. These two are very frequently confused.

Electrical Insulators are materials that have poor conductivity of an electric current. Most plastics, and glass and ceramics, are good insulators. Generally metals are extremely poor insulators - they are conductors.
