I'm really sorry that you lost your grandpa. Here is a model poem that you really can't use as your own, but maybe you can use it as an inspiration. It was found on-line.

Tomorrow is his memorial church mass and he's always been a fan of my poetry that I write, I decided to write him one last poem to read during his service. I'm nervous, but he deserves this. Let me know what you think:

God gently took your hand, and whispered, "Come with me.

Your work on Earth is over, it's time to set you free.

Don't worry about your family, for they will be okay.

They have such happy memories, that they'll remember every day."

Hi,

The first thing you need to do, is realize and KNOW, there are no rules. There are styles of poetry which they teach. Some rhyme, some don't. Some have a cadence, or a rhythm. Example.

I walked in a circle

like my mind often goes in.

It seem that I really know,

This circle

then I don't need to walk.

This does NOT rhyme. (I just made it up for your example)

What makes it work, is how it is set up, or how YOU READ it, how you phrase it.

So, now, to write about your Grandfather, realize there are no rules, and don't write how you think others will think. The only important thing to write, is how YOU FEEL, what YOU THINK.

First, you have to just get something written. Later, you can change, edit, throw it away, start new, keep and edit, whatever. Just get something down to express what it is you want, feel etc. This is the most important thing about writing. Once down, read it to yourself aloud, and you will begin to 'get' how you want it to sound, phrase, etc.

Things to think about - How you feel, what he meant to you, to others, things you did together, what he taught you, a certain 'special' moment... Remember, there are NO rules. YOU are the Poet, YOU are the writer. What you write, is not subject to a grade in a class. It is a personal expression of art that you create to express what it is in your heart and mind. No one can be in that place but you. In this, you are Master.
