Optima Dies... Prima Fugit is a quote from The Georgics by the Ancient Roman poet Virgil. In English, it means "In the lives of mortals, the best days are the first to flee." This is of course referring to childhood, hence its relation to Will Cather's My Antonia. It is through this quote that Cather's influence from Virgil is revealed, and by looking deeper into the novel this quote is physically represented many times.
